Nicie, daughter-in-law Betsy Shields first sent me Frugal Chariot ages ago, she knew I would love it. Bravo charging into your second year. The Arnold Arboretum was a favorite haunt of my grandmother Marie Haffenreffer, a great and generous gardener who lived nearby. On another subject, do you know which band is playing above the bookshop -- I think a Jamaica Plain friend of mine, funnily enough. And my copy editor's eye wonders if, under your Calendar, you give give Annie Oakes the wrong last name. Lucky you and Jay to own that beautiful book -- Jack, what a creep. Carry on! Hatsy Shields
Hatsy, Thank you so much for your kind words, memories and, especially for finding that mistake (now fixed). The Arboretum is a treasure. I used to visit in my youth and I even wrote a bad poem there about oak trees. Not sure about the band but there is some more info here: https://jpcentresouth.com/2021/05/10/spectacular-set-at-south-street-spring-fair/ xoxoxo Nicie
Thanks very much for mentioning your Aunt Priscilla. Her presence and wisdom is sorely missed. This time in history would be easier to take if she were here to ease the journey.

I feel that so strongly, Beverly. Oh, to be at the kitchen table with her right now!
